Left Handers – The Eccentricity in the Crowd

Let’s admit it – southpaws are attractive! They look so regal when they pick that pen up to sign a cheque or when they pick up a cricket bat and caress that cover drive. Stand across the court to a certain Rafael Nadal (tennis) or Carolina Marin (badminton) and you’ll know you are headed towards an unchartered territory; a territory that you may not be very well equipped to handle as a right hander. You can almost feel a different wave of energy around them. Hold the left hand of a right handed person and then hold the left hand of a southpaw, you’ll notice a certain enigma about the left hander. It’s like a different, unheard and unfelt mode of communication. The touch of a left hander would say a lot, for the way our body is cross-wired – left hand is connected to the right hemisphere of our brain while the right hand is connected to the left hemisphere. And that’s why left handers think and behave differently than others.

Just to let you in on the purposes of the right and left hemispheres of our brain, the right one, that controls the left hand, is the creative and imaginative side aka the feminine side of our personality while the left one, that controls the right hand, is the logical side associated with the actual brainy and masculine functions. Around 13% of the world population is left handed and most of them are genetically gifted with this trait. It’s very easy to find that left handers are exceptional with activities and sports that require hand-eye coordination and are therefore superb at ball sports. People with a dominant right brain are incredibly creative and visual thinkers as well.

Apart from the aura and intimidation that southpaws carry, they also carry something invisible to eyes of a layman – the agony of using items created purely for the use of right handers. Try and observe the tiny objects of daily use and their placement around us and ask yourself this – how would and should this be for a left hander and where would it be placed correctly for him. It is then it’s realized how different and difficult this world is for southpaws. Fortunately though, people and organizations are becoming aware of this and are working towards making their life a tad bit easier. Websites like The Left Hand Shop are creating and sourcing plethora of daily use items for left handers and making them available in India. Check it out, it’s pretty cool actually.

So next time you see a left hander, don’t bore them by asking the same old question –  “Are you a lefty?” Instead just enjoy their demeanor and feel lucky that you are in esteemed company of a gifted individual.

Harda – A Seed is Sown

A trip back in time will definitely take me to a day in Harda. It’s a tiny town at the heart of Madhya Pradesh. Unnoticeable railway station, shabby outdoors, pathetic roads, and yet an amazingly calm and earthly demeanor that makes you feel at home.

I first met this place on a wet day. Me and my brother were to appear for an entrance test at our first convent school. It was tough – for English was never our forte. They kept talking to us in that foreign language all the while getting us to appear for tests in Mathematics, Science, and English. I don’t remember the marks I scored then, but the principal seemed pretty satisfied with however we had performed. I remember dad buying our books, notebooks, and our uniforms from their stationery shop. I remember the parking, the church, buildings under construction, ducks, birds, green color of the wet trees, incessant rain, and the hooting from the trains passing by the nearby railway station.

By the time, we completed the admission formalities, we got late and dad decided to buy us dinner from a nearby market. I remember us searching for food throughout the town in that rain. The rain, the rain, I just can’t get that rain out of my head. It just never drizzled. It poured all day so hard and with such ferocity, it forced shopkeepers to stay in and finding an eatery was hard. After much search though, we found a street side vendor selling CHAAT and GOLGAPPE (Pani Puri) in a deserted street.

GOLGAPPE – ones that I was going to remember for all my life. Now to let all of you in on what GOLGAPPE are all about, let me show you a picture and the procedure on how they are served –

Pani Puri

These are served with a filling made from potatoes and peas and later filled with tangy tamarind or mango water. You then put the whole thing at one go inside your mouth and let it blast inside, leaving a heavenly taste on your tongue and on the cheek walls. Now, these are so thin, they tend to sog even with mild moisture in the air and that day, it was pouring. So to add some taste to them, he added hot fillings, off the stove. There were no potatoes, only peas and I’m yet to taste anything like that till date. Somehow he had added magic.

When we returned though, all I remember having was a rather unwelcome feeling of separation!

What I’d like to visit from that day again –

1. The GOLGAPPE.

2. The railway station.

3. That rain.

4. That school compound.

5. I’d like to know the marks I scored in my English test.

What I’d like to skip on my next visit –

NOTHING!

Time Warp

Let me assure you that the crop of girls in our college was never very respectable. Well I’m not a flatterer myself but humans always have an image of the opposite gender they want to flirt with. I had one such image of really smart girls, well dressed and today I was seeing them aplenty. Those girls from Satyam Computers HR department. Man my sore eyes got a field day.

Yes, Satyam Computers from Hyderabad arrived in our college to conduct off-campus recruitment. We knew they were going to, 6 months ahead, for we prepared for it. I certainly had but wasn’t sure whether it was adequate. Group discussions, personal interviews, aptitude tests, technical interviews were all practised. It’d been so hectic, I, in my mind had already cleared the interview.

The day finally arrived. We were called at 6 am in the morning only for written tests to start at 10 am. They enrolled everyone and I along with it, got my early morning jaded eyes laid on some of the beautiful ladies who had arrived. With all my documents in my bag and resume in my hand, I kept roaming the campus behaving like I’d never seen it before. I was living it, absorbing the magnanimity of the occasion, and had made up my mind to not get nervous.

The day ended, with me still alive in the competition. Went to my room and kept preparing for the interviews tomorrow. We were called at 6 am again for they were going to be very thorough in their selection. I wasn’t bird watching today. Each candidate, all 116 of us were grilled through the day when at 11:30 pm, they declared that I was selected. Joy knew no bounds. This was one of my time warps!
